FITNESS
You will need to be in good shape. We recommend at least 6 weeks of regular walks carrying a 15kg backpack. If your hiking boots are new, breaking them in during this training period is recommended to save discomfort in the field.
RISKS
Of course there are risks associated with spending time in wild nature, especially off-track where we primarily operate.
Without trails, you will often find yourself on uneven ground, and will be carrying your own equipment which increases the liklihood of slips, trips and falls. Accidents such as this are much less likely to happen with sufficient preparations, for example, building fitness ahead of your trip, and ensuring the gear you bring is suited to the terrain. — If you need help packing, you can find our packlist here.
There are also regional risks associated with hiking in and around our National Parks. Risks like landslides, avalanches and rockfalls. For more information on risks such as these, you can visit the Mountain Safety Council resource page here.
Your safety is our priority and if you have any questions or concerns about the risks involved, ‘book a call’ to speak with our Glenorchy-based head of mountain operations, a qualified career expert in mountain safety who will welcome all queries.
