Snow Kingdom

Heli ⋅ Snow Shoe ⋅ Traditional Camp

3 Nights

$2,920pp (based on 5 pax)

A night camping in the snow might sound frightening but it is not! It is a wonderful experience! A cosy wood-fire heated heavy canvas tent, camp beds, snow shoes, snow caving, tobogganing and more.

ITINERARY

Day One:

Arrive at The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp and get settled in. You’ll meet your guide who will brief you in and check your gear. We have a licensed wood-fired restaurant ‘Base Camp Food Over Fire’, sauna, cosy mountaineer’s huts — everything you might need for a good night’s sleep ahead of tomorrow’s adventure.

Day Two:

Up nice and early, and after breakfast you’ll meet your guide and climb into one of our Defender 4X4’s to be shuttled to a nearby heli port. It’s a spectacular flight into the mountains of the UNESCO South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

You will all get involved in setting up your high alpine camp. Once all set up, and after you’ve had some refreshments, you’ll begin your snow fun. You will be taught some new skills and put them to good use (snow cave making, snow shoeing, ice axe technique, how to fit and use crampons, introduction to high alpine safety and more).

Once back at your alpine snow camp base you will help with dinner preparations and enjoy spending time with your group far away from technology and truly connected. The star gazing up there is next level too.

Day Three:

Today’s activities will have been planned by your guide in collaboration with your group. These activities will vary from group to group.

Break your snow camp down, pack it up for your heli lift back to The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp. We will all be waiting there for you, fires will be on, sauna too, the bar will be open and your dinner will have been slow cooking all day.

You will enjoy your debrief with your guide (doesn’t take long) with enough time for you to freshen up for dinner before you retire to your cosy mountaineer’s hut.

Day Four:

Breakfast and take your time checking out in the morning, transfers to Queenstown Airport are available if required.

FITNESS

In the weeks ahead of your trip, we recommend taking regular walks with your pack. If your hiking boots are new, breaking them in during this period is recommended to save discomfort in the field.

RISKS

Of course there are risks associated with spending time in wild nature, especially off-track where we primarily operate.

Without trails, you will often find yourself on uneven ground, and will be carrying your own equipment which increases the liklihood of slips, trips and falls. Accidents such as this are much less likely to happen with sufficient preparations, for example, building fitness ahead of your trip, and ensuring the gear you bring is suited to the terrain. — If you need help packing, you can find our packlist here.

There are also regional risks associated with hiking in and around our National Parks. Risks like landslides, avalanches and rockfalls. For more information on risks such as these, you can visit the Mountain Safety Council resource page here.

Your safety is our priority and if you have any questions or concerns about the risks involved, ‘book a call’ to speak with our Glenorchy-based head of mountain operations, a qualified career expert in mountain safety who will welcome all queries.
